UPSC Civil Services Exam 2024 Selection Process

The selection process for UPSC Civil service Examination 2024 will be completed by the following stages.

  • Prelims Written Examination
  • Mains Written Examination

UPSC Civil Services Exam 2024 Exam pattern

The examination pattern for UPSC CSE 2024 consists of three stages:

Stage I: Preliminary Examination  

Paper-I: General Studies

Nature: Merit Ranking
Duration: 2 Hours
Questions: 100
Marks: 200

Paper-II: General Studies (CSAT)Nature: Qualifying
Duration: 2 Hours
Questions: 80
Marks: 200
The questions in the IAS Prelims are multiple-choice or objective type.
Negative marking applies only to the Prelims stage, with 1/3rd (0.66) deduction for incorrect answers.
GS Paper-II (CSAT) is qualifying, requiring a minimum score of 33%.
Blind candidates receive an extra 20 minutes per paper.
Candidates must appear in both papers for evaluation, and Prelims marks don’t count towards the final score.

Stage II: Mains Examination

The Mains Exam is a written descriptive test with nine papers:

Paper-A: Compulsory Indian Language (Qualifying) – 3 Hours, 300 Marks
Paper-B: English (Qualifying) – 3 Hours, 300 Marks
Paper-I: Essay (Merit Ranking) – 3 Hours, 250 Marks
Paper-II: General Studies I – 3 Hours, 250 Marks
Paper-III: General Studies II – 3 Hours, 250 Marks
Paper-IV: General Studies III – 3 Hours, 250 Marks
Paper-V: General Studies IV – 3 Hours, 250 Marks
Paper-VI: Optional Paper I – 3 Hours, 250 Marks
Paper-VII: Optional Paper II – 3 Hours, 250 Marks

Total marks for Mains: 1750 Marks

Interview or Personality Test

Candidates clearing the Mains with the cut-off marks proceed to the Personality Test, which carries 275 Marks.

Candidates can choose their medium of writing (Hindi, English, or a language in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution).
Final ranking is based on Mains and Interview scores.
Personality Test held only in UPSC Bhavan, New Delhi.


UPSC Civil Services Exam 2024 Exam Syllabus

UPSC syllabus assesses the knowledge, aptitude and analytical abilities of the candidates through three stages.

UPSC Prelims Syllabus
  • Papers: Consists of two compulsory papers – General Studies Paper-I and General Studies Paper-II (CSAT).
  • Type of Questions: Objective (MCQ) type.
  • Total Maximum Marks: 400 (200 marks each paper).
  • Duration of Exam: 2 hours each.
  • Negative Marking: 1/3rd of the marks assigned to a question.
  • Medium of Exam: Bilingual (Hindi & English).

General Studies Paper-I Syllabus:

  • Covers topics such as Current events, History of India & Indian National Movement, Indian & World Geography, Indian Polity & Governance, Economic & Social Development, Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity & climate change, General Science.
    General Studies Paper-II (CSAT) Syllabus:
  • Comprises topics like Comprehension, Interpersonal skills, Logical reasoning & analytical ability, Decision making & problem solving, General mental ability, Basic numeracy & Data interpretation.

UPSC Prelims Syllabus

  • Consists of written examination and interview (personality test).
  • Includes nine papers divided into two categories – qualifying & papers counted for merit.

Qualifying Papers:

  • Paper-A: One of the Indian Language
  • Paper-B: English

Papers Counted for Merit:

  • Essay
  • General Studies I, II, III, IV
  • Optional Subject Papers I & II
