CDS Selection Procedure Explained: Unlocking Your Path to Success

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is gearing up to conduct the Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination, opening the door to various positions in the Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, and Officers Training Academy. Here’s a detailed guide on the selection procedure for the Combined Defence Services Exam.

UPSC Selection Procedure Overview:

The selection process involves four key stages:

1. Written Examination:

  • The written exam comprises objective-type questions with a duration of 2 hours, carrying a maximum of 100 marks for each subject.
  • Depending on the academy (IMA, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, or Officers Training Academy), the written test includes subjects like English, General Knowledge, and Elementary Mathematics.
  • Successful candidates proceed to the intelligence and personality test at the Service Selection Board (SSB) based on their preferences and the respective service HQ.

2. Interview/Personality Test:

  • Candidates who clear the written test move on to the SSB procedure, consisting of two stages: Stage I and Stage II.
  • Stage I includes Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests and Picture Perception Description Test (PP&DT), shortlisting candidates based on their combined performance in OIR Test and PP&DT.
  • Stage II comprises an Interview, Group Testing Officers Tasks, Psychology Tests, and a conference. This multi-day assessment involves three assessors: the Interviewing Officer (IO), Group Testing Officer (GTO), and the Psychologist.
  • Marks are allotted holistically, considering the candidate’s performance in all tests, and the Conference also holds equal weightage.

3. Document Verification:

  • Document Verification occurs after the candidate qualifies for the Interview/Personality Test.

4. Medical Examination:

  • Candidates recommended by the SSB undergo a medical examination (Special Medical Board) by a Board of Service Medical Officers.
  • Only those declared fit proceed to the Academy, and candidates declared unfit receive details about the Appeal Medical Board (AMB) process, which must be completed in a Command Hospital or equivalent within 42 days of the Special Medical Board.

Navigating through these stages will set you on the path to your dream career. Best of luck!
