NDA Selection Procedure Details:

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) administers the NDA (National Defence Academy) & NA (National Academy) Exam-II, providing a gateway to aspirants seeking a career in the esteemed Armed Forces. Eligible candidates embark on this journey by applying online, with the minimum educational qualification being a 12th Class pass in the 10+2 Pattern. The selection process unfolds through a rigorous combination of a Written Test and an SSB Interview, each holding a pivotal role in determining a candidate’s suitability.

Selection Procedure:

Written Examination:

The initial stage of the selection process is the Written Examination, a crucial test of aptitude and knowledge. Comprising two subjects, Mathematics and General Ability Test, candidates face a time limit of 2 ½ hours for each subject. The maximum marks allocated for Mathematics are 300, while General Ability Test carries 600 marks. The papers in all subjects are presented as sets of objective type questions. Notably, the question papers for Mathematics and Part B of the General Ability Test are bilingual, available in both Hindi and English. The UPSC exercises discretion in setting qualifying marks for the examination.

Interview:
  1. Candidates who successfully navigate the Written Examination move on to the Interview stage, conducted by the Services Selection Board (SSB). This stage is pivotal in evaluating candidates’ intelligence and personality traits, assessing their potential as officers. For candidates aiming for Army, Navy Wings, and the 10+2 Entry Scheme, the process includes Intelligence and Personality Tests. Meanwhile, Air Force Wing aspirants must undergo a specialized Pilot Aptitude Test.
Intelligence and Personality Test:

The SSB procedure unfolds in two stages, with only candidates clearing Stage I proceeding to Stage II. The detailed breakdown includes:

a. Stage I:

Comprising Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests and the Picture Perception Description Test (PP&DT). Candidates are shortlisted based on their combined performance in OIR Test and PP&DT.

b. Stage II:

Involves an extensive evaluation, including an Interview, Group Testing Officer Tasks, Psychology Tests, and a Conference. Spanning four days, these tests holistically assess a candidate’s intelligence and personality. The three assessors—Interviewing Officer (IO), Group Testing Officer (GTO), and Psychologist—contribute equally to the overall evaluation. The Conference marks are based on the initial performance across the three techniques. Importantly, there is no separate weightage for each test, emphasizing a holistic approach.

Notably, Air Force aspirants undergo the Pilot Aptitude Test, a unique evaluation crucial for their selection.

The SSB’s various tests are strategically designed to unearth Officer-Like Qualities (OLQs) and assess a candidate’s trainability. The ultimate outcome, either a Recommendation or Non-Recommendation, is determined collectively by the Board’s decision.

*Note: Air Force candidates undertake the pilot aptitude test only once. The test’s outcomes influence subsequent interviews, underscoring its significance in the selection process.
